COVID-19 may represent the next phase in the evolution in the Coronavirus family, and, in fact, may not be entirely new.

No. Not at all. We need to “Flatten the Curve.”

Flattening the curve means that all the social distancing measures now being deployed in places like Italy and South Korea, and in the US, are less about preventing illness and more about slowing down the rate at which people get sick.

As with any fast-moving epidemic, new information and time help us rethink what’s going on. I mentioned the other day that lack of leadership was the problem with our lack of testing in the US.

We need to be testing more people for COVID. Without testing, the case count is meaningless in the US.

As an infectious diseases doc, I like graphs and charts. They tell a story and can be helpful when trying to figure out where you are and where you are going.

By definition, social distancing refers to infection control actions taken by public health officials to stop or slow down the spread of a highly contagious disease.
