College students could be at risk for monkeypox. But they may not listen to or be tuned into sources of information about staying safe.

The New York state Department of Health wants students to deliver the prevention message and is holding a social media video contest so they can connect with their peers. This sounds like a good way for students to talk to each other about this serious public health problem.

Did we say there are prizes?

There’ll be six winners -- first, second, and third place in the categories of live action and animation. The winning videos will be featured on the Department of Health social media platforms. Amazon, grocery, or gas gift cards will be awarded in each category as $500 for first place; $300 for second; and $200 for third.

You can submit your video starting Oct. 24. The deadline is Nov. 28 at 11:59 p.m.

Videomakers must be enrolled in a college or university in New York State at the undergraduate or graduate level; and be 18-26 years old.

Each entry must follow all these rules:

  • Content must educate young adults ages 18 – 26 about monkeypox and its transmission, dangers, and/or prevention.

  • Video must address at least one of the topics listed in the Approved Messaging section at Monkeypox Awareness - Help Prevent Spread (ny.gov).

  • Only eligible contestants may submit a video.

  • If any of your collaborators is 17 or younger, make sure a parent or guardian signs their video release waiver form.

  • Video may be live action, animation, or a combination.

  • No copyrighted music or images. All assets must be original or copyright free. If using copyright-free assets, please give credit on the entry form.

  • Video must be a maximum of 15 seconds long; have a minimum resolution of 540 x 960 px or 640 x 640 px; and the file can be no larger than 500 MB

All submissions must follow the content policies of TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.
